• Some people with mild addiction may be able to enter a 12-step program directly.
• If you’re participating in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or a similar 12-Step program, you’ve probably heard that making amends is an important part of your recovery journey.
• That’s because it attempts to rectify the outward consequences of the disease.
• By writing a fearless moral inventory, we uncover the exact nature of our wrongs, including unresolved resentments, fears, and harms we’ve caused.
• Our public relations should be guided by the principle of attraction rather than promotion.
• The process of taking a personal inventory, making amends, and continuing daily self-reflection allows such people who once felt hopeless to experience freedom and purpose.

Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. It’s important to note that making amends is for the person we hurt. Yes, we partake in the process to “clean up our side of the street,” but we do not make amends to clear our conscience or undo our feelings of guilt. If someone does not want to hear from us, we respect that and do our best to move forward with our recoveries. The sponsor plays a critical role in the amends process by offering guidance, expertise, and tailored advice to navigate the process of making amends.

Step 5: “Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.”

• It reminds us that we are to place principles before personalities; that we are actually to practice a genuine humility.
• Many times, these kinds of promises serve to alleviate the wrongdoer’s guilt and so that they can say they apologized before their loved one died.
• Whenever possible, a direct amend is made face-to-face rather than over the phone or by asking someone else to apologize on your behalf.
• Step 9 begins by revisiting your Step 8 list and working with a sponsor to determine the best way to approach each amends.
• Part of the reason is that 12 Step programs are based on anonymity.

It’s in this stage that we take our first honest look at the damage addiction has caused to our lives and our inability to stop because of it. We begin to consider the possibility of marijuana addiction a new way of life—one where we are no longer running the show. We are not tied to the old behaviors of our disease, or to our character defects.

The trustees of the General Service Board are, in effect, our A.A. They are authorized by the groups to handle our over-all public relations and they guarantee the integrity of our living amends principle newspaper, the A.A. All such representatives are to be guided in the spirit of service, for true leaders in A.A.

Don’t Make 12-Step Amends or Promises You Cannot Keep

This is the pivotal moment where we stop fighting, stop trying to manage everything on our own, and trust that a power greater than us can guide our recovery. It’s a decision to let go of self-will and begin living by spiritual principles that lead to freedom. Making amends is a pivotal part of the AA 12-step recovery process.
